  1. I have WordPress installed. I have PhotoSmash installed.

Now, how can I set this blog to work as a "rate my photo" kinda site?

Each photo would be displayed with the rating hands below.
Maybe 3 or 4 photos per page, single column, each as a separate
entity if you get my drift.

There would not necessarily be a "gallery" display with multiple
photos grouped together in thumbnail format.

Your help would be greatly appreciated.

  2. Hi ct,

If I don't answer in the next day...ping me again. I'll try to write up a tutorial on it.

  3. Just checking to see if you have had time to do the tutorial on the "rate a photo" site idea.

  4. CT,

I'll try to get it done tonight. Been working through some heavy code changes.

    Thanks for the reminder.

  5. CT,

As I read your question more closely, I realize that your question is not so much about how to set up ratings as it is about how to set up the look and feel of the posts.

You have lots of options here. Perhaps the best option would be to create a separate post for each image. This would give you lots of options for rating the Post instead of the rather limited options available in rating a PhotoSmash image. There is even a plugin YATPB (Yet another Photo Blog plugin) that is designed for setting up Photo Blogs, which might be a better fit than PhotoSmash.

There are folks using PhotoSmash for Rating type sites (see http://Foodgazing.com http://www.SavorySights.com or http://beforeafters.com ). These all use PhotoSmash Extend to create a new post on upload. http://smashly.net/photosmash-galleries/extend/

As you've probably figured out, getting ratings started is as simple as creating your Gallery, editing it in Gallery Settings, then setting the Rating Type and Rating Position (at the bottom of the first tab).

You can use Custom Layouts to display your images in any manner that you want...show the large images only, add in custom fields for descriptions or other things, show the tags, etc. Here's a tutorial on the custom layouts: http://smashly.net/photosmash-galleries/how-to/create-custom-layouts/

You can do any sort of HTML design you want in the custom layouts. It's really incredibly flexible.

If you're stuck on a specific part of this, let me know. I thought you were wondering how to get ratings started, but I don't think that was your question after all.

    Cheers,
    Byron

  6. Hi Byron,

I'm sorry if this is a wrong topic for this. And thank you for this great plugin, I have tried to find an easy-to-use and working gallery plugin for Wordpress, this seems great so far :) That SavorySights.com is exactly what I'm trying to do, a simple gallery where users can upload their photos and rate others (a photo competition). I tried to search the forums and site for instructions, but didn't find any. Maybe you have some tutorial site with all the tags and stuff, I just haven't found it :)

Ok, I have several issues here. I get photos listed, but under these I have also a list of galleries (well, one gallery). I don't know how to hide this.

Also, how can I hide the "toggle ratings" link? I want that ratings are visible and accessible at all times. Just like in SavorySights.

    I have Wordpress 3 installed.

EDIT: I have set up that anyone can add photos and rate them. I also tried to make a simple custom layout for this, but the gallery list and toggle ratings link just keep appearing.

    Thanks,
    Ville

  7. Hi Ville,

    You're welcome!

    1) It sounds like your gallery is on the page you've got set for the Gallery Viewer. Go to PhotoSmash Settings and set the "Gallery Viewer Page" to " -- no gallery viewer --" That should do it, but if not, make sure you don't have 'gallery_viewer=true' in your shortcode, and make sure in Gallery Settings (edit the gallery you're working on), that it's gallery type is set to Photo Gallery.

    2) SavorySights uses a Custom Layout...here's the tutorial on Custom Layouts: http://smashly.net/photosmash-galleries/how-to/create-custom-layouts/
Depending on your skill with writing HTML and CSS, it shouldn't be too difficult to get the custom layout working. Take a look at the layouts that are already in there. Std_Widget is fairly simple and should give you an idea of how they work.

    3) The ratings in SavorySights actually display a popup that is barely visible when you hover over the rating...they're just using the [ps_rating] tag in a custom layout and have the Rating Type as "Standard 5 star" and the Rating position as "Overlay thumbnail" set on the gallery in the Gallery Settings page.

    Hope that helps!
    Byron

  8. Thanks a lot Byron, that did help. I didn't realize it was the Gallery Viewer Page setting that made the listing. I'm quite familiar with HTML and CSS, I will look into Std_widget next and study some already made layouts.

    Thanks a lot!

    Ville
