Hi Byron,
I use your Photosmash plugin a lot (thanks!) but this time I'm not being able to figure out why it's not working:
I was first trying to get it to work with Thickbox.
The gallery images open in new window.
I tried installing Shadowbox but it also didn't work.
I noticed also that the image rotation on my homepage is not working properly anymore.
I'm thinking there's an incompatibility with Photosmash, because if I disable the PS plugin the rotation works normally.
The dev site is here: http://northstarmontessori.ca.s113547.gridserver.com/photo-gallery
Can you please suggest a fix?

Thank you!
Cintia

Hi HDP,

Glad you like PhotoSmash!

You can create a custom layout to do that. Here's how to create a custom layout: http://smashly.net/photosmash-galleries/how-to/create-custom-layouts/

Here's some code that should work for the HTML Layout portion of the custom layout:

<div>
<img src='[image_url]' alt='[caption_escaped]' />
<br/>
[caption]
</div>

Of course, that is just a DIV element with the image and caption inside it. You might need to style it with CSS, or set the size or a thousand other things depending on how you want it to show up.

Hope that helps,

Hi there - first off, kudos for a fantastic plugin! Thank you!

One question - I'm only going to have one gallery of pictures, and I wish they would just display right off the bat instead of having to click a thumbnail and transfer to an inner page. Is there a way to do that?

Hi,

PhotoSmash Settings sets the defaults for new galleries that will be created in the future. Existing Galleries need to be changed in Gallery Settings. In PhotoSmash Settings, there is a multiple disk icon beside many of the line items...by clicking that, you can update your existing galleries to the chosen setting en masse.

But typically, you need to go to Gallery Settings, edit the gallery you affect in the Dropdown and then make your changes there.

Hope that helps,

I installed PhotoSmash on Wordpress. When I change the defaults to change the look of the way that the photos are displayed, nothing changes.

I changed the voting from overlay to below the caption. Nothing changed - the voting is still an overlay.

I changed the number of photos to be displayed on the page. Nothing changed.

I changed the layout style. Nothing changed.

No matter what I change, nothing changes with the way things are displayed on the page.

I'm using Arras theme - is there a conflict?

Here's the pages where the photos are displayed that I'm trying to change... You can see that everything is still formatted and styled to the "default" settings, even though they are currently all different in the PhotoSmash Settings control panel.

Here's where users upload the photos...

http://www.vortex-of-attraction.com/2010/12/29/how-do-you-feel-when-youre-in-the-vortex-submit-your-vortex-y-photos-here/

I want at least three photos to display on this page, along with the full captions.

Here is where the photo gallery is based. I would like at least three photos to display on this page, along with the full captions.

What am I missing? How do I get this to look different?

Thanks in advance for any help you can offer.

Hi Byron, thanks for the details- After you let me know the plugin wasn't that intensive I called back my hosting service and asked them specifically what caused the blockage- This representative was a lot more helpful and said that it was something in the Wordpress backend that was constantly being refreshed- and therefore too many requests were beng made on the server so they blocked the IP.

After my conversation with him I don't think it was the Photosmash Plugin, but something else in the dashboard that I wasn't aware of while I was trying to configure your plugin.

Thanks for your help!!

Unfortunately, I'm not very up-to-date on WP themes or frameworks. Here's an article that details some of the heavy hitters in that area: http://wordpress.stackexchange.com/questions/3725/wordpress-frameworks-and-parent-themes

I personally did a couple of themes using Blank and now using Twenty-ten with Child Themes. I kind of like Twenty-Ten since it's standard and gets upgraded by the Automattic folks. You can do a lot with it using Child Themes. So, that's direction I'm leaning.

Would like to know what you decide to go with.

PhotoSmash doesn't typically put any undue stress on servers. It has a fairly modest Query Count (you may notice I have a horrible query count on the main part of this site, but that appears to be due to the Download Monitor plugin I use...not sure why, but it adds 30-40 queries when its running and it runs on every page :-( ).

If you have some mechanism for monitoring server stress, I'd recommend you put PhotoSmash on another blog or server and see if it is doing the same thing there.

Were there any other plugins involved? Or changes to the theme? It could be possible that something was throwing your site into an infinite loop or something.

As for image resizing, PhotoSmash uses the standard WordPress functionality for resizing images, so it should not produce any more stress than WordPress would if you were uploading images through it.

I'm really not sure what might be the problem. This isn't something that has been linked to PhotoSmash before.

Please let us know if you determine what the issue is.

Thanks,

Today I installed the PhotoSmash plugin, and shortly after my hosting company blocked my IP due to a suspiciously high amount of server stress coming from my IP. I read somewhere that the photo resizing can be fairly intensive- but I hadn't even gotten to uploading photos.

Any suggestions on this? I really need photosmash for this client, but can't really install if it's going to be putting this much stress on our server.

UPDATE: Just a note if this helps: I was also having problems with the 'Add Photo' opening a new window at the time and was attempting to fix this before getting my IP blocked.

It was indeed the theme that I was using. Bummer, since I had close to 30 hours into design, but there is obviously a code conflict somewhere. Can you recommend a good theme for a 100% gallery site?

Hi CB,

No, the tutorial should be ok...and what you've done is probably ok.

I recall some people having a 404 problem a while back, but I don't recall what it was.

- Try switching to the Twenty Ten theme and see if it works using that

Also, you might try switching off other plugins. Some plugins do things to the WP Query that are not always expected (Photosmash does that with Contributor galleries ;-)

If you've got "Show Contributor Galleries" turned on in PhotoSmash Settings / Spec. Galleries, it should be working.

I'm drawing a blank.

Byron,
I'm having an issue getting contributor galleries to show. I have enabled contributor galleries as shown in the tutorial at http://smashly.net/photosmash-galleries/how-to/contributor-galleries/. The author page shows that there should be a link to a gallery, but no pictures are displayed. Clicking the link results in a 404 error. Have

I've double checked that everything has been done as per the tutorial. Is it outdated, or have I done something wrong here?

Yes, that's the problem. The new Twitter API requires the whole OAuth dance, and I haven't figured out how to make that work since it goes through Twit-pic into Twitter. I probably need to pull Twitpic-it down.

Since October I have been unable to post any of my new images that were uploaded to twitter via the TwitPic-it service. Also when I try and "test" the connection in the config it says it is unable to connect to twitter with no error message. Is this because of Twitters new API and the plugin just isn't updated yet? Any ideas as to what it could be? Or recommend another plugin just for the auto posting to twitter of new image uploads?

Other than that Photosmash is great!

Hey Byron, trust you had a good weekend.
Is it possible to let me know on the above, having a number of galleries on one page with the "6", "12" etc images, one then clicks on the gallery opener and go into the main gallery of the 6 or 12 images. How was that done.

Thanks a mill

Andrew

Hey Byron,hows things?
OK, got the gallery to run, all good thanks.
One issue id like to see if you can assist with please, i have seen an example of one of the users where they have all galleries on one page, with a Key Image, stating 6 or 10 or 20 images in the galler, the user can then click on the thumb, and then be taken to the gallery with all 10 images in. I just cant figure out where or how to do this.
If you can assist with this, my gallery is done and im grateful to you for a brilliant app.
Take care
Andrew

HI Byron, thanks for the reply mate.
Its def not an issue of using the back button and picking up a cache.
Can you maybe load a pic, see what it does, it will do the upload, give me a success note, once you close the pop up window, it shows the image, then click on it. It is not finding the lightbox.

the adress is http://www.lifeonnorth.com/?page_id=261

would appreciate any advice you have.
Thanks a mill

Hi Andrew,

Thanks!

Do the images come back if you refresh the screen? If you upload, then navigate away, then come back with the back button, it doesn't show them because the back button is picking up your cache.

Hope that helps,
Byron

HI Byron.
First off, thanks for the great file.
I have set up everything as I think it should be. I have made a user populated gallery and loaded it to a page, added pics. ONce submitted, all 6 pics are there, but when i navigate away from the page, then come back to it, it all vanished.
I have tried the permalink change and it sill does it.

Can you advise when you have a moment.
Thanks a mill

Hi Mark,

You can enable/disable comments on a Page or Post in the Write Page or Write Post screen. Go to Pages, then Edit the Page that has you gallery. Near the bottom is a check box for enabling/disabling comments.

As far as commenting on individual images, unfortunately, there isn't a really good way of doing comments at this point. You can set up the images to open in their WP Attachment pages where commenting is possible. To do that, you would set the Caption style in Gallery Settings to one of the Attachment page options.

I'm going to add commenting at some point, but it's not really there yet.

Hello,

Please let me know how to put photo comments or just enable the page comment form on the gallery page. Right now I have the galery on this page http://jonfooblog.com/photos , but why is it that the comment form is disabled? any way of enabling it? or adding a comment on every single photo? how will comments work with shadow box js?

Thanks

- Mark

Hi ICMT,

I wasn't able to see your site when I tried this evening. My guess is that you may have Problem #1 on that page too...there are plugins and themes that don't load jQuery properly and that seems to blow things up.

Cheers,
Byron
